PFMEA vs DFMEA

What would be the differences and similarities of process FMEA and Design FMEA?

The whole protocol of FMEA would apply in both. In other words, in both a failure mode is identified and the effects of it will be analyzed. the differences would be where such activities are to be performed in each of PFMEA and DFMEA.

In Design FMEA, the goal is to identify the failure modes relevant to the product and thus DFMEA should be applied in the stage of designing the product, before it is sent for production. Failures in this stage could cause the product dysfunctions or malfunctions, a shorter life of the product, and/or safety issues during the product application.

Process FMEA, as the term suggests, should be applied to identify potential failure modes of a process, either when a new process is about to launch or in an already existing process. The potential process failure modes could lower the quality of the final product, lower the reliability of the process, lead to the customer unhappiness, and finally generate safety and environmental issues.
